OAKDALE, Calif. — A delivery driver in Oakdale was hurt after he fell into an open sewer drain Thursday afternoon.

The Modesto Fire Department responded to the call just after 4:40 p.m. along J Street.

Arriving crews saw that the driver fell into the drain after stepping out of his car, according to the fire department.

A rescue team was able to pull him from the sewer pipe, and he was flown to a hospital for his injuries.

It’s not clear why the sewer drain was open. A Modesto Fire Department spokesperson said a grate cover was found on the bottom of the hole, but it’s unclear whether it was already on the bottom or if it fell when the driver stepped on it.
