THIS IS KCRA KCRA 3 MORNING NEWS. HERE ALONG THE AMERICAN AND SACRAMENTO RIVERS. TODAY, THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE ACROSS OUR REGION ARE EXPECTED TO HEAD TO OUR LOCAL WATERWAYS. BUT THE PRECAUTIONS YOU NEED TO TAKE. WILL I HAVE THOSE COMING UP? AND THREE PEOPLE ARE HURT AFTER A SHOOTING IN RANCHO CORDOVA. WHAT DEPUTIES SAY LED UP TO THE VIOLENCE. AN ILLEGAL FIREWORK CRACKDOWN, HOW OFFICIALS ARE PUTTING A STOP TO SALES AND PENALTIES FOR THOSE LIGHTING THEM. GOOD MORNING. I’M LETICIA ORDAZ, HAPPY TO BE BACK FROM VACATION. IT IS. SATURDAY, JUNE 22ND. TODAY IS A KCRA 3 WEATHER IMPACT DAY BECAUSE OF THE TRIPLE DIGIT TEMPERATURES THAT WE’RE EXPECTING. LET’S GET A CHECK ON OUR FORECAST NOW WITH RHEOLOGIST KELLY CURRAN. YES, IT’S GOING TO BE A HOT ONE OUT THERE FOR US TODAY FOR SURE. SO LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT WE’RE DEALING WITH. YES AN IMPACT DAY TODAY. AND THAT IS BECAUSE OF THE HEAT. THE TRIPLE DIGIT TEMPERATURES THAT WE’RE EXPECTING IN THE VALLEY. WE’RE ALSO LOOKING AT DOUBLE DIGITS AS WE GET INTO SUNDAY. IT’S STILL GOING TO BE VERY WARM THOUGH, AND VERY SUMMERLIKE STRETCH OF WEATHER HERE ON TAP FOR US FOR MOST OF THE WEEK. NOW. HERE’S A LOOK AT THE CURRENT TEMPERATURES. SO IF YOU WANT TO GO FOR A RUN OR TAKE THE DOG FOR A NICE LONG WALK, NOW IS THE TIME TO DO THAT. WE’RE AT 62 DEGREES RIGHT NOW IN SACRAMENTO, BUT LOOK, MODESTO, YOU’RE ALREADY AT 70 DEGREES PLACER VILLE, ALREADY COMING IN AT 75 TRUCKEE IN SOUTH LAKE TAHOE AT 46 DEGREES WINDS ARE GENERALLY LIGHT. THEY’LL BE OUT OF THE SOUTHWEST TODAY, BUT NOT MUCH TO COOL US OFF. AND AS FAR AS THE SATELLITE PICTURE, YOU SEE A LITTLE BIT OF A MARINE LAYER. AGAIN, NOT ENOUGH REALLY TO HELP THINGS OUT. SO AS FAR AS WHAT WE’RE EXPECTING HEADING THROUGH THE REST OF THE DAY TODAY, MAYBE YOU WANTED TO GO AND CHECK OUT THE FARMERS MARKET. I SUGGEST GOING EARLY BECAUSE EVEN BY 10 A.M. WE’RE TALKING 79 DEGREES BY LUNCHTIME TODAY, IT’S ALREADY GOING TO BE 90 DEGREES IN SOME WAYS. YOU CAN BEAT THE HEAT TODAY. WELL, MAKE SURE YOU’RE KEEPING THOSE BLINDS CLOSED TO KEEP THE SUN OUT. THAT HELPS TO KEEP THINGS A LITTLE BIT COOLER. SLEEP IN THE LOWER LEVEL OF YOUR HOME. HOT AIR RISES. MAKE SURE THOSE CEILING FANS ARE SET FOR COUNTERCLOCKWISE AND TRY TO COOK OUTDOORS. IF YOU CAN. IN THAT WAY, YOU DON’T HEAT YOUR HOUSE UP OR MAYBE IT’S JUST KIND OF SALADS AND TAKEOUT. LETICIA, IT SOUNDS GOOD TO ME. THANK YOU SO MUCH, KELLY. AND WITH THE WEATHER HEATING UP, LOTS OF PEOPLE ARE EXPECTED TO HEAD TO THE WATER TO COOL DOWN. LIVECOPTER3 FLEW OVER THE CONFLUENCE OF THE AMERICAN AND SACRAMENTO RIVERS AND SAW A LOT OF PEOPLE ENJOYING TIME AT THE BEACH. KCRA 3’S ERIN HEFT JOINS US LIVE NOW FROM ALONG THE RIVERS IN SACRAMENTO WITH SOME IMPORTANT REMINDERS ON SAFETY. ERIN, GOOD MORNING. YEAH, GOOD MORNING LETICIA. THAT’S EXACTLY WHERE I’M AT. WHERE LIVECOPTER3 WAS ALONG THE SACRAMENTO AND AMERICAN RIVERS AT THE CONFLUENCE. AND THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE ARE EXPECTED TO HEAD TO LOCAL WATERWAYS THIS WEEKEND JUST TO COOL OFF. BUT A CAUTIONARY REMINDER THAT DOES MEAN THAT WE’RE PRIMED FOR ACCIDENTS. WE’VE ACTUALLY ALREADY HAD QUITE A FEW ACCIDENTS THIS YEAR, LEADING TO 911 CALLS THAT EITHER END WITH RESCUE MISSIONS OR RECOVERIES OF VICTIMS. AND ON DAYS LIKE TODAY WHERE TEMPERATURES ARE HIGH AND MANY ARE ON THE WATER, LOCAL RESPONDERS ASK THAT YOU TAKE PRECAUTIONS. THINGS THAT THEY ASK YOU KEEP IN MIND DON’T DRINK WHILE ON THE WATER. WEAR A LIFE VEST. WATCH YOUR CHILDREN CLOSELY. REMEMBER, THE CURRENT CAN BE MUCH FASTER THAN YOU ANTICIPATED, AND ALSO THE WATER CAN BE MUCH COLDER THAN YOU THINK. ALL OF THESE THINGS BACK OUT HERE LIVE CAN ACTUALLY LEAD TO TRAGIC ENDS. WE’VE SEEN IT TIME AND TIME AGAIN. IF YOU EXPECT TO BE ON THE WATER TODAY, PLEASE TAKE PRECAUTION IN SACRAMENTO ERIN HEFT KCRA THREE NEWS. ERIN, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR LIVE REPORT THIS MORNING. WE’LL CHECK BACK IN WITH YOU. IN THE MEANTIME, THE SACRAMENTO CORONER’S OFFICE SAYS LAST YEAR’S 60 PEOPLE DIED ON OUR WATERWAYS IN STANISLAUS COUNTY. OFFICIALS ARE TELLING PEOPLE TO STAY OUT OF THE WATER. RIVERS ARE RUNNING FAST AND VERY COLD RIGHT NOW. AND WITH THE WATER LEVELS RUNNING HIGH, THERE’S A GREATER CHANCE OF UNDERWATER OBSTRUCTIONS LIKE TREES OR UNDERGROWTH. THEY’RE REMINDING PEOPLE TO WEAR A LIFE JACKET AND TO AVOID GETTING TOO DEEP IN THE WATER. THERE ARE CURRENTS. THE TOP OF THE WATER COULD LOOK EXTREMELY, UM, CALM AND SAFE. BUT ONCE YOU GET IN THE CURRENT UNDERNEATH THE TOP OF THE WATER COULD BE SOMETHING THAT SURPRISES YOU. AND LAST YEAR, THE COUNTY RECORDED EIGHT DEATHS FROM DROWNINGS. THIS YEAR THEY’VE ALREADY HAD THREE. ANOTHER CONCERN THIS WEEKEND IS FIRES. LIVECOPTER3 WAS OVER THE SCENE OF THIS FIRE THAT BROKE OUT YESTERDAY AFTERNOON NEAR FLORIN PERKINS ROAD IN JACKSON ROAD. YOU CAN SEE HOW IT BURNED THROUGH SOME THICK, DRY GRASS RIGHT HERE. FIREFIGHTERS CALLED IN A HELICOPTER TO MAKE SOME WATER DROPS. THERE WERE NO HOMES OR BUILDINGS IN THE AREA. LUCKILY, FIRE CREWS WERE ABLE TO GET THIS CONTAINED BEFORE IT COULD DO ANY DAMAGE. IT BURNED UP TO THREE ACRES. TURNING NOW TO RANCHO CORDOVA, WHERE DEPUTIES WERE INVESTIGATE A TRIPLE SHOOTING, THIS ONE HAPPENING ON FOLSOM BOULEVARD NEAR COLOMA ROAD. THE SACRAMENTO COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS THEY GOT CALLS OF A SHOOTING AT AROUND EIGHT LAST NIGHT. AND ACCORDING TO OFFICIALS, THERE WAS A FIGHT IN THE PARKING LOT THAT ESCALATED AND LED TO A SHOOTING. DEPUTIES SAY 15 TO 20 SHOTS WERE FIRED AND TWO MEN AND A WOMAN WERE SHOT. THEY WERE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL, BUT THEY ARE EXPECTED TO BE OKAY. OFFICIALS SAY A SUSPECT IS DETAINED. THE SACRAMENTO COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS IT TOOK A LOT OF COLLABORATION FROM MULTIPLE LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES. QUICK ACTION GETTING INFORMATION AS QUICK AS THEY COULD FROM PEOPLE HERE ON THE SCENE AND BEING ABLE TO ACT UPON THAT GREAT RESPONSE BETWEEN THE RANCHO CORDOVA POLICE DEPARTMENT, THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE AND SACRAMENTO PD HAD THEIR HELICOPTER OVERHEAD. SO THAT’S THAT COLLABORATION. WE TALK ABOUT REGIONALLY WITH OUR LAW ENFORCEMENT PARTNERS. IT’S SECOND TO NONE. SO WE’RE ABLE TO WORK VIRTUALLY SEAMLESSLY. AND YOU KNOW, HOPEFULLY THAT DETENTION LEADS TO AN ARREST, IF NOT MORE THAN JUST THAT. AT THIS POINT, OFFICIALS HAVE NOT CONFIRMED IF MORE THAN ONE SUSPECT WAS INVOLVED IN THE SHOOTING. TO THE CITY LIMITS NOW IN SACRAMENTO, POLICE ARE SEARCHING FOR A PERSON WHO SHOT AND KILLED A MAN NEAR A CITY PARK AND POLICE SAY THIS HAPPENED AROUND 515 YESTERDAY EVENING AT A PARKING LOT NEAR GRANITE REGIONAL PARK. IT IS AN AREA THAT HAS A SOCCER FIELD, A SKATE PARK AND ALSO A DOG PARK. OFFICERS SAY ONE MAN WAS SHOT. HE WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL WHERE HE LATER DIED. NO SUSPECTS ARE IN CUSTODY AT THIS POINT AND OFFICERS ARE CONTINUING TO INVESTIGATE. IT’S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR AGAIN, CRACKING DOWN ON ILLEGAL FIREWORKS. THIS WAS THE SCENE IN FOLSOM ON JULY 4TH OF LAST YEAR, AS HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE SET OFF ILLEGAL FIREWORKS, LEADING TO AT LEAST ONE MAN GETTING SEVERELY HURT. AND JUST THIS WEEK, SACRAMENTO COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES ARRESTED A MAN THAT THEY SAY HAD FOUR TONS OF ILLEGAL FIREWORKS IN HIS HOME. KCRA 3’S CATALINA ESTRADA SPOKE TO OFFICIALS ABOUT WHAT THEY’RE DOING TO STOP ILLEGAL FIREWORK SALES. THIS IS THE LARGEST SEIZURE OF ILLEGAL FIREWORKS IN SACRAMENTO COUNTY HISTORY. NEARLY 8,000 POUNDS OF ILLEGAL FIREWORKS SEIZED DURING A BUST IN SOUTH SACRAMENTO. THEY HAD A LOT OF THE SAFE AND SANE LOGOS ON THERE, BUT THEY WERE COUNTERFEIT. DEPUTIES ALSO DISCOVERED FIVE FIREARMS AND MORE THAN $20,000 THEY BELIEVED TO BE FROM THE SALE OF ILLEGAL FIREWORKS. THEY ARRESTED 36 YEAR OLD RANDY TURN. IF YOU’RE LIVING IN A CROWDED NEIGHBORHOOD AND YOU’RE LIGHTING OFF THESE AERIAL FIREWORKS, YOU KNOW, SETTING PEOPLE’S HOUSES ON FIRE, DISPLACING THEM, JUST A LOT OF DISASTROUS CONSEQUENCES. AS 4TH OF JULY APPROACHES, SACRAMENTO SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS STOPPING ILLEGAL FIREWORKS SALES IS A TOP PRIORITY. WE’LL ACTUALLY BE TEAMING UP IN PATROL CARS, RIDING AROUND LOOKING FOR ANY OF THESE REPORTS OF ILLEGAL FIREWORKS THAT ARE, YOU KNOW, BEING SET OFF AND DOING SOME ENFORCEMENT THAT WAY. THE CITY OF ROSEVILLE IS ALSO INCREASING PENALTIES FOR ILLEGAL FIREWORKS. IT’S BECOME A MISDEMEANOR FOR ILLEGAL FIREWORKS USE INSTEAD OF AN INFRACTION. ROSEVILLE FIRE SAYS. ON TOP OF STIFFER FINES, PEOPLE CAN ALSO BE CHARGED WITH THE COST OF EMERGENCY RESPONSE, WHICH COULD ADD UP TO THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. SO IT IS A CHALLENGE TO BE ABLE TO RESPOND TO OUR NORMAL CALL VOLUME WHEN WE ARE OFTEN CALLED FOR THE RESULTS OF ILLEGAL FIREWORKS USE TO AVOID POSSIBLE FIRES, INJURIES OR PENALTIES. AROUND 4TH OF JULY, OFFICIALS SAY SAFE AND SANE FIREWORKS ARE THE WAY TO GO. GO TO AN AUTHORIZED RETAILER. GO. GO FROM TO ONE OF THOSE PHANTOM FIREWORKS OR TNT STANDS THAT YOU SEE OUT THERE THAT ARE SANCTIONED TO SELL THESE FIREWORKS AND LICENSE TO DO SO IN SACRAMENTO COUNTY. CAROLINE ESTRADA KCRA THREE NEWS. LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS TELL US ANYONE WORRIED ABOUT ILLEGAL FIREWORKS SHOULD DEFINITELY GIVE THEM A CALL. AND HAPPENING RIGHT NOW, A MAJOR CONSTRUCTION PROJECT IS UNDERWAY THAT COULD HAVE A MAJOR IMPACT ON TRAFFIC THIS WEEKEND. THE ON RAMP TO NORTHBOUND I-5 FROM RICHARDS BOULEVARD IS CLOSED UNTIL MONDAY MORNING. CREWS HAVE ALSO REDUCED LANES NORTHBOUND I-5 AT THE GARDEN HIGHWAY AND SOUTHBOUND BY THE I-80 INTERCHANGE. CALTRANS SAYS YOU SHOULD EXPECT DELAYS WHEN TRAVELING. IT ACTUALLY, UH, LEAVE EARLIER FOR AN APPOINTMENT OR FOR CATCHING THAT FLIGHT AT THE, UH, AIRPORT. WE ASK THAT YOU MAYBE GIVE YOURSELVES AN EXTRA 30, MAYBE EVEN 40 MINUTES THAT, UH, THEN WHAT YOU NORMALLY WOULD BE GIVING YOURSELF. AND KEEP IN MIND THAT THE SPEED LIMIT WILL BE REDUCED TO 55MPH. HAPPENING TODAY AS SACRAMENTO POOL IS OPENING JUST IN TIME TO KEEP FAMILIES COOL DURING THE TRIPLE DIGIT HEAT WAVE THAT WE’RE EXPECTING, THE DOYLE POOL IN SOUTH NATOMAS OPENS TODAY. IT IS LOCATED ON MENDEL WAY, AND TO CELEBRATE THE REOPENING, THE POOL IS HAVING A SPECIAL $1 ADMISSION ALL WEEKEND LONG. THE POOL WAS SET TO OPEN EARLIER BUT WAS DELAYED DUE TO SOME MAINTENANCE ISSUES. TIME NOW IS 709. TIME FOR KCRA 3 WEATHER EVERY TEN MINUTES. LET’S CHECK IN WITH KELLY WITH MORE ON TODAY’S FORECAST. DEFINITELY HEATING UP. YEAH, IT CERTAINLY IS. NOW, AS YOU’RE HEADING OUT THE DOOR RIGHT NOW, IT’S NOT THAT BAD. IN FACT, NOW IS THE TIME TO GET OUTSIDE IF YOU NEED TO TAKE THE DOG FOR A WALK. OR MAYBE YOU WANT TO GET A RUN IN, GO NOW. HERE’S A LOOK AT WHAT WE’RE DEALING WITH. SO STOCKTON BEAUTIFUL SUNNY SKIES. BUT THAT SUN’S GOING TO BE BEATING DOWN ON US THIS AFTERNOON. SO SACRAMENTO 62 DEGREES STOCKTON RIGHT NOW YOU’RE AT 67. MODESTO IS ALREADY AT 70, AND LAKE TAHOE IS COMING IN AT 46 DEGREES. AS WE HEAD THROUGHOUT THE DAY TODAY. LOOK AT THIS DAY PLANNER HERE BY NOON ALREADY 90 DEGREES 102 IN SACRAMENTO BY 4:00. EVEN AT SIX, WE’RE STILL TALKING 190 AT 8:00. THE SUN GOES DOWN AT 830. THAT’S WHEN THINGS ARE GOING TO START IMPROVING. NOW, AS WE TAKE A LOOK AT THE FORECAST FOR SIERRA TODAY, WE’RE EXPECTING HIGHS IN THE MID 80S AROUND TRUCKEE, SOUTH LAKE TAHOE 83. THAT’S STILL VERY WARM. YOSEMITE IS GOING TO GET UP TO 93 TODAY FOR THE FOOTHILLS. PLENTY OF SUNSHINE AGAIN. WARM TEMPERATURES. GRASS VALLEY 97, JACKSON 98 DEGREES. SO ANY OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES YOU WANT TO BE OUT THERE DOING THOSE RIGHT NOW BECAUSE THE AFTERNOON IT’S JUST GOING TO BE TOO HOT. LAKEPORT TODAY, 94 DEGREES, NAPA 82 AND FAIRFIELD IS GOING TO TOP OUT AROUND 95. THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY, IT’S ALL TRIPLE DIGITS HERE. SO 101 IN LODI, MENTAL. THOUGH 105 TURLOCK ALSO EXPECTING A HIGH TODAY OF 105. IN SACRAMENTO WE’RE LOOKING AT 102 FOR TODAY. ROSEVILLE THOUGH IS GOING TO GET UP TO 104 IN YUBA CITY. MARYSVILLE. 106 FOR THIS AFTERNOON, WE’RE GOING TO TALK MORE ABOUT THE HEAT AND HOW LONG IT’S EXPECTED TO LAST. THAT’S COMING UP KELLY. THANK YOU SO MUCH. UP NEXT, GETTING READY FOR THE FIRST PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE. IT’S JUST DAYS AWAY. HOW THE CANDIDATES ARE PREPARING TO FACE OFF TO WIN OVER UNDECIDED VOTERS AND COUNT DOWN TO THE SUMMER OLYMPICS IN PARIS. THE COMPETITIONS THAT ARE HEATING UP THIS WEEKEND AND THOSE VYING TO MAKE IT ON TEAM USA.
